Iyagi #7 – 매력적인 여자 (= Attractive women) / Natural talk in 100% Korean

Download Available

Welcome back to another episode of Iyagi, a series where we have two native speakers talk 100% in Korean but at a little slower pace than average and while using relatively easier vocabulary, in order to maximize what you learn from listening to the talks. In this episode, 현우 and 석진 are talking about what kind of women they find attractive. This is part 2 of the men’s talk, so be sure to listen to part 1 and the women’s talk through our previous episodes if you haven’t. And as always, keeping talking to us in Korean and keep those comments coming! Thank you for studying with us!

You can view the PDF here or get our books and e-books on our online bookstore.

    Wow first comment ^_^!
Thank you for making these audio clips. I don’t understand everything yet, but I still like to practice and listen to the conversations. I get very excited when I understand some words and phrases. ^_^

    • 안녕하세요, 음악을 좋아해요? 🙂
Ditto, I like the process to know more and more when I study foreign languages.
So, which new words did you understand from this episode?

    • ILoveMusic

Sorry it took me so long to respond T_T.
Did you say you like music too? ^_^
I think I heard 현우씨 say “는” after the word for today so that meant compared to other days you would be talking about a new topic.
      Am i right? ^_^
Then did you mention something about a girl idol Kpop group?
      I thought I heard someone’s name.
Then I had to smile when I heard some english words in the conversation.

I was getting excited though because even though I didn’t understand every single thing said. I felt as though I could at least follow along with most of the conversation. It helped me feel less stressed and I thought
“Yes! I AM learning Korean!” ^_^

    • ILoveMusic, thank for listening and for the comments. Yes, I was using 는 to contrast two topics. 🙂 Keep listening and if you have any more questions, please keep them coming.

(sorry for the bad pronunciation, but I need the practice! 현우 and 석진, thanks for the interesting talk!)

    • Kevin Manley 씨,
와, 한국어 발음도 좋고 한국어 문법도 거의 완벽해요. 정말 멋져요. 짱!
네, 저도 같은 생각이에요, 예쁜 사람은 처음 만날 때 호감을 느끼지만, 성격이 좋지 않으면 금방 호감이 떨어져요.

얼굴도 예쁘고, 성격도 좋은 사람 어디없나요? 하하하하하

  • Miso

Hello to both of you 석진 씨하고 현우 씨!
As time goes by I find the 이야기 series to be my favorite.
TTMIK의 이야기들이 내가 제일 좋아하는 방송이에요. 처음에는 pdf만 읽은 후에 좀 어려운데요. 하지만 이야기를 듣기는 아주 유익하고 거의 다 이해할 수 있어요. 또 문맥으로 모르는 단어의 의미를 발견하는 걸 좋아해요.
이 에피소드는 선택한 topic이 좀 사적인 것 같은데 늘상 재밌었어요.
I’m not a guy but I can relate to the story 석진 씨 mentioned about seeing people getting prettier as the evening goes by … ^^”
    너무 고마워요. 안녕히 계세요!

    • Miso씨 이야기 재미있게 들어주셔서 감사합니다.
Miso씨도 한국어 문법이 거의 완벽합니다. 여기 한국어 잘 하시는 분이 왜 이렇게 많죠? 하하하

  • Tze Lim

haha. i knew this topic will come someday.
i guess i’m still very hesitant to write in korean for fear that i might convey the wrong message. 🙁
anyway, i think most guys are the same but this doesn’t mean that not so pretty girls are not attractive at all. somehow, some men might fall for those too. it’s just the chemistry.

however, plastic surgery has attracted many girls to undergo some kind of improvement to look better. i guess if most turn out like the actress in ‘200 pounds of beauty’ movie then it’s great. haha
i’m not against plastic surgery at all. if it can make someone look good, why not. maybe if we can choose our genes in the future then we won’t need to bother altering but when everyone looks ‘perfect’, the world will be a boring place.

look forward to writing in korean soon! thanks hyunwoo and seokjin! no to blind dates? i guess it’s hard to find nice girls as most of them are after something.. haha 😛

    • Julian

My opinion about plastic surgery is that if it makes you FEEL better then it’s all good and if it’s only for you and not doing it for someone else, but the almost impossible beauty standards is what made plastic surgery popular and the fact that we are bombarded by the magazines, actors and actresses and such. I guess in Korea it would be the idols, that’s why I also admire idols that besides being beautiful are also talented, specially the ones that are not really beautiful by normal standards but yet they are madly talented, have strong charisma and presence, like let’s say 2NE1. 🙂

    • Tze Lim

i totally agree with you Julian. i thought naturally people would want it to feel better about themselves and improve their self-esteem. also, to do it for themselves and not for others. however, there is probably peer pressure and what’s norm in culture which makes it more acceptable.

well what’s beautiful can be interpreted differently by different individuals.. like the saying ‘one man’s meat is another man’s poison’. hehe

    • Tze Lim

      ooppss i forgot to add..
yeah idols with talents are really admirable. i don’t know much about 2NE1 but i really admire singers who can play the piano and sing well at the same time. i also admire rain who can dance so well. wondergirls and girls generation can sing and dance well too. haha.

way to go korean idols! 아자 아자 화이팅! ㅋㅋ

  • 안녕하십니까?
저는 한국으로 공부합니다.그래서 의원이 되고 싶습니다.

    • 안녕하세요, 한국어 공부 잘하고 있나요?
When I see your comment, I thought two jobs.
Generally, when I say 의원, people may remind Doctor (의원) and Assemblyman (국회의원).

Who do you want to be?

  • Wan

진석진 씨는 티아라를 말했어요. 저도 그들을 만나고 싶어요. 😉

    • Wan 도 티아라 알아요? 와, 티아라 인기가 많네요.

      만약에 만나면, 알려 드릴게요.

    • Wan

      저는 희망 나중에 그들을 볼 수 있어요… 🙂

  • “…여기 있장아요, 석진 and 현우” ㅋㅋ funny funny. though i don’t understand everything you said, i can understand the feeling of what you say. “if she’s pretty….” “if i have a wife…” something about age difference… 21 or 22? i guess 석진 says if she’s pretty, that’s enough!
i really am just guessing from the bits and pieces that i understand.

근데, do you think it’s possible to generalize about what most men are looking for?

  • 무라이언

I agree; it’s all about the pretty face. I did see 김태희 in IRIS, but thought the girl playing the North Korean agent was better looking. Never heard of 정가은 before so I had to look her up — 예쁜!

    • The girl playing the North Korean agent is 김소연. She is also famous actress in Korea and she started to play much earlier than 김태희.

  • Thx you so much I love your work, simple and very interesting. Keep it up.

    • Thanks for listening sowon! Yeah keep it up~!

  • 부라이언

I have a question on the use of the word 싫다. A dictionary definition for this word gives the following:

    undesirable, dislike, hate, loath

In English there is a big difference between dislike and hate; hate being a really strong word.

One phrase used in the Iyagi was “아, 김태희 씨는 제가 싫어요”. My interpretation of this sentence was that there’s nothing necessarily wrong with김태희, but she’s just not my type. But the phrase “나는 뱀이 싫다” could be translated as “I hate snakes”, which is much a much stronger statement than “snakes are okay, but I prefer dogs.” So, how do you really know the intent of the speaker? Is it all an assumption based on context?

Also, I just want to say you guys are doing an awesome job!!

    • 브라이언, that was a very interesting question! 🙂 Your question made me think for a while about the various meanings of the Korean word, “싫다”. But like you said, I think it depends on the context – even if you use the exact same sentence for just about anything, the the word 싫다 could mean either “to be not your type” or “to hate something” ^_^

And thank you!!!! for studying with us 🙂

      You did good job!

  • Cameron

I was surprised to hear 석진 선생님 mention T-ara’s 은정. I think she’s really pretty too. I think a lot of female K-pop singers are really pretty, but my favorite is 소녀시대의 김태연.

  • 방송을 주어서 감사해요!
나는 매력적인 여자대해서 상각할때 의모보다 성격이 중요해요.
하지만 어려운 문제 있잖아요: 뭐가 더 중요해 – 성격이나 의모.
    사실은 모든것이 중요해요, ㅋㅋㅋ.
아 – 좋은 웃음소리도 있으면 좋겠어요!

  • Nora

이 번 레슨 듣기 전에 80% 쯤 이해할 수 있는 것 확긴해는 데 들어서 70% 가지 이해 못이니까 실망은 크게 였어요, 이 레슨은 이해기 위해서 pdf 또 읽기해야했어요 :(.
    이제 다 이해요 🙂 .. 전 여자이니까 여기 가지 코멘트 할게요^^
