안녕하세요, 톡톡 여러분. 톡투미 인 코리안의 김예지입니다. 여러분, 잘 지내셨어요? 저도 잘 지냈는데요. 오늘은 좀 새로운 영상을 만들어 보려고 이렇게 마이크를 켰습니다. 제가 여러분께 이렇게 천천히 한국어로 이야기하는, 그런 영상을 만들어 보려고 해요. 영상 보시고 댓글로 어땠는지 남겨 주시면 너무 감사할 것 같습니다. 오늘은 "한국어가 늘지 않아요"라는 주제를 가지고 이야기를 해 나가려고 합니다. 사실 한국어뿐만 아니라 언어를 배우고 계신 학습자 여러분들이라면 이 고민 다 한 번쯤 해 보셨을 것 같아요. "영어가 늘지 않아요", "한국어가 늘지 않아요", "독일어가 늘지 않아요." 이 고민들은 꼭 다들 해 보시는 고민 같은데요.

I'm going to make a video where I talk to you in slow Korean. I would be so grateful if you could watch it and let me know how it was in the comments. Today, I'm going to talk about the topic of "My Korean is not improving." Actually, if you're a learner of any language, not just Korean, I think you've had this problem at least once. "My English is not improving," "My Korean is not improving," "My German is not improving." I think these are concerns that everybody has at some point.

'이 주제에 대해서 이야기를 해 보면 재밌지 않을까?' 생각을 했습니다. 여러분 한국어가 왜 늘지 않을까요? 정말 공부, 학습 시간이 부족했기 때문일까요? 그게 유일한 이유일까요? 저는 이번 주제에 대해서 쫌 학습 영역별로 나눠서 이야기를 해 보면 재밌을 것 같다는 생각을 했습니다. 자, 먼저 회화, 말하기에 대해서 이야기를 해 봐요. 톡톡 여러분들 혹시 그런 생각 해 보신 적 있으세요? '나는 한국어로 듣는 거는 그래도 조금 할 수 있는데, 말하는 것은 정말 어렵다', '말하기가 정말 안 나온다' 이런 생각 해 보셨어요?

I thought, "Wouldn't it be interesting to talk about this topic?" Everyone, why do you think your Korean is not improving? Is it really because you didn't study enough? Would it be the only reason? I thought it would be interesting to talk about this topic in terms of learning areas. So, let's talk about "speaking" first. Talk-Talk’s, have you ever thought to yourself, "I can kind of listen to Korean and understand it, but speaking in Korean is really hard," or "I can't really speak in Korean"?

보통 많은 분들이 듣기에 비해서 말하기를 어려워하시는 것 같아요. 근데 사실은 저도 쪼금 그러거든요. 저도 외국어를 공부할 때 듣기가 훨씬 쉽고 말하기가 훨씬 어려운 것 같아요. 그런데 우리의 학습 환경을 생각을 해 보면, 우리가 공부하는 그런 상황을 생각해 보면 말하기를 하는 상황보다 듣기를 할 수 있는 상황이 더 많아요. 그래서 다른 말로 하면 인풋을 하기가 더 쉬운 거죠. 아웃풋을 할 수 있는 상황이 없으니까요. 그렇다면 우리가 어떻게 좀 똑똑하게 이 상황을 해결해 볼 수 있을까요? 제가 몇 가지 제안을 해 보려고 합니다. 일단은 여러분들 단어 외우실 때, 단어를 혹시 어떻게 외우세요?

In my opinion, a lot of people usually find it harder to speak than to listen, and I'm a little bit like that myself. When I study a foreign language, I find it much easier to listen and much harder to speak. But if you think about our learning environment, if you think about the situation that we're in, there are more situations where we're listening than where we're speaking. In other words, it's easier to input, because there are not many situations for output. Then, how can we handle this situation wisely? I'm going to give you a couple of suggestions. First of all, when you memorize words, how do you memorize them?

제가 좀 말하기에 도움이 되는 방식으로 단어를 외우는 방법을 소개해 보려고 해요. 보통 단어를 외우실 때, 단어를 뭐, 예를 들어서, 뭐 '버섯'이라는 단어라고 하면, '버섯' 단어를 보고 스펠링을 보고 소리를 들으시겠죠. 그리고 아마 따라 읽으실 거 같아요. 혹시 책으로 공부하시는 분들은 버섯이라는 단어가 들어간 예문도 꼼꼼하게 확인을 하시겠죠. 그리고 이제 외워요. 버섯, mushroom, 버섯, mushroom! 그런 다음에 누가 "How do you say a mushroom in Korean?" 이렇게 물어봤을 때, "음… 버? 버섯? 버섯이요!" 이렇게 말씀하시곤 하죠. 그리고 '나는 이제 다 외웠다' 이렇게 생각을 하기가 쉬울 것 같아요.

I'm going to introduce a method to memorize words in a way that's going to help you speak (in Korean). Usually, when you memorize words, let's say the word "버섯" (mushroom). Then, you look at the word, check the spelling, and listen to its pronunciation. You might also read it aloud. If you're studying with a book, you'll carefully check example sentences that include the word "버섯." Then, you'll memorize it. 버섯, mushroom, 버섯, mushroom! Later, when someone asks you, "How do you say 'mushroom' in Korean?", you might respond, "Um… 버? 버섯? It's '버섯'!" And you're likely to think, "I've memorized the word, "버섯."

그런데 이렇게 하기보다는 한 단어, 한 단어를 외울 때 모두 문장으로, 자기의 문장으로 만들어서 내뱉어 보는 연습이 중요합니다. 예를 들어서, 아까 버섯이라는 단어를 생각을 해 볼게요. 그냥 책에 쓰여 있는 혹은 다른 사람이 말한 문장을 듣고 외우고 이해하는 거보다 내가 스스로 만들어서, 문장으로 만들어서 단어를 사용해 보는 경험이 중요해요. 예를 들어서, "저는 어렸을 때는 버섯을 싫어했어요. 그런데 지금은 버섯이 좋아요." 이런 식으로 단어를 사용해 보는 거예요.

However, instead of doing that, it's important to practice creating your own sentences using each word and saying them out loud. Let's take the word "mushroom" as an example. Rather than simply memorizing and understanding sentences written in a book or spoken by others, it's crucial to have the experience of using the word in your own sentence. For example, you use the word like this. "I used to hate mushrooms when I was a kid, but now I love mushrooms."

이때 중요한 점은 이렇게 문장으로 만들다 보면 새로운 단어가 아직 익숙하지 않아서 바로 나오지 않는 경우가 있어요. "저는 어렸을 때는 버… 버… 버섯?" 이런 식으로 쫌 버벅이는 경우가 생길 거예요. 이런 경우에는 "내가 아직 단어를 확실히 외웠다"라고 보기에는 어려운 상황인 거 같아요. 대화를 할 때 단어를 떠올리면 바로 발음까지 정확하게 할 수 있어야 "내가 단어를 확실히 외웠다" 이렇게 말할 수 있는 거 같습니다. 여러분들은 어떻게 생각하시나요? 그리고 이런 버섯 같은 명사 그러니까 사물의 이름 뿐만 아니라 동사를 문장으로 만들어서 말해 보는 게 더 중요한 거 같아요.

During this process, it's important to note that there may be instances where new words don't come to mind immediately because they are not yet familiar to you. You might stumble, saying something like, "When I was a kid, mu… mu… mushrooms?" In such cases, I don't think you can say you've perfectly memorized the words yet. You should be able to recall a word and also pronounce it accurately right away, before you can say, "I have completely memorized this word." What do you think? Furthermore, I believe it's more important to try making sentences not only with nouns like "mushroom," which are names of things, but also with verbs and speaking them out.

뭐, 예를 들어서, '요리하다'라는 단어가 있어요. 이 단어는 문장으로 넣어서 꼭 말을 해 보세요. 왜냐하면, 그러면 이 동사 이 '요리하다'라는 단어를 다양한 형태로 쓰게 되잖아요. 우리가 한국어에서 얘기를 할 때 '요리하다' 이렇게 말하는 경우는 없어요. 항상 예를 들어서, "제가 남자 친구를 위해서 요리를 했어요" 혹은 "엄마가 저를 위해 맛있는 요리를 만들어 주셨어요. 요리를 해 주셨어요" 이런 식으로 다양한 형태로 이야기를 하게 되죠. 이거를 연습을 하시는 겁니다.

For example, you have the word "to cook." Make sure to put this word in a sentence and speak it out. The reason is that by doing so, you will be able to use this verb, "cook," in various forms. In Korean conversations, you don't simply say "요리하다" in sentences. You often express it in different forms, such as "I cooked for my boyfriend" or "My mom made a delicious meal for me. She cooked for me." This is what you want to practice.

단순히 요리하다, to cook, 요리하다, to cook 이렇게 공부하시지 마시고, 문장으로 넣어서 다양하게 만들어 보세요. 제가 했던 것처럼 시제를 다양하게 사용해서 만들어 보는 연습이 도움이 많이 되실 것 같아요. 또, 한 가지 다른 방법을 추천을 드리고 싶은데요. 말하기 연습을 할 때 "나는 쫌 말할 때 실수할까 봐 걱정이 되기도 하고, 좀 준비 없이 바로 말하는 게 아직은 어렵다" 하시는 분들 글쓰기를 기반으로 말하는 연습을 해 보시면 좋을 것 같아요. 이거는 저도 되게 많이 사용했던 방법인데요. 일단 어떤 상황에 대해서 내가 하고 싶은 말을 글로 먼저 쓰는 거예요. 예를 한번 들어 볼까요?

Don't just study like "요리하다", "to cook", "요리하다", "to cook", but try to put them in various sentences. I think you'll find it helpful to play around with tenses like I did. Here is another method I'd like to recommend. When practicing speaking, if you find yourself thinking, "I'm worried about making mistakes when I speak and it's still difficult for me to speak spontaneously without preparation," then you might want to try practicing speaking based on writing. This is a method I've used quite a bit. First, you write out what you want to say about a situation. Let me give you an example.

감기에 걸린 상황에 대해서 여러 가지로 표현을 해서 전달을 할 수가 있겠죠. 예를 들어, "제가 최근에 감기에 걸렸어요. 처음에는 열이 많이 났어요. 그런데 열은 다행히 내려갔어요. 목이 아프진 않지만 기침이 많이 나서 불편해요." 이런 이야기를 할 수 있겠죠. 이걸 바로 이야기로 하기에는, 말로 하기에는 어려울 수 있으니까 먼저 노트에 적어 보는 거예요. 노트에 적고 표현도 조금 익히셔야겠죠. 표현을 익힌 다음에 노트를 덮고 같은 말을 한국어로 해 보는 거예요.

There are many ways to describe a situation where you have a cold. For example, you could say, "I recently got a cold, and at first I had a lot of fever. But thankfully the fever went down. I don't have a sore throat, but I'm coughing a lot, and it's uncomfortable." It can be hard to say this right away, so you might want to write it down in a notebook first. Write it down and learn some expressions. And then, close the notebook and try to say the same thing in Korean.

이렇게 연습을 하다 보면, 물론 노트에 적힌 말을 그대로 외워서 하기에는 어려울 거예요. 그런데 오히려 정확히 외우지 못해도 좋아요. 오히려 그게 더 좋은 거 같아요. 정확히 외우지 않아도 그 단어를 이해하고 문장에서 정확하게 써서 새로운 문장, 같은 뜻을 가졌지만 새로운 문장으로 만들어 볼 수 있다면 정말 연습이 많이 될 거 같아요. 이 방법으로 제일 좋은 방법이 저는 일기라고 생각을 하는데요. 특히, 초급 학습자분들, 혹은 중급 학습자 분들에게 이 방법 정말 많이 추천합니다. 일기를 한번 써 보세요. 일기는 나에 대해서 쓰기 마련이에요.

If you practice like this, of course, it's going to be hard to memorize everything that's written in your notes. But it's okay even if you can't memorize it exactly. I think that's actually better. Even if you don't memorize the sentences perfectly, if you can understand the word and accurately use it in new sentences that convey the same meaning but in a different form, it would be a valuable practice. I think the best way to do this is to keep a journal. I really recommend it, especially for beginner and intermediate learners. Try keeping a journal. When you write a journal, you're bound to write about yourself.

그래서 많은 한국어 단어 중에 내가 쓸 법한, 내가 내 상황을 설명할 때 어딘가에서 쓸 법한 그런 단어들을 적어 보고 읽어 보고 또 문장으로 만들어 볼 수 있어요. 그래서 실제로 대화를 할 때 이 일기에서 내가 썼던 그 표현들을 말하게 될 기회가 굉장히 많더라고요. 그래서 여러분들도 일기를 써 보시면 좋을 것 같아요. 그런데 여기서 중요한 점은 또 일기를 그냥 글로만 써서 끝내는 게 아니에요. 일기를 쓰고 내가 새로 찾아본 표현들을 정리를 하고, 조금 이 표현들을 익힌 다음에, 일기를 보지 않고 같은 상황을 말로 설명할 수 있어야 돼요. 방금 제가 감기 걸렸던 이야기를 해 드렸잖아요.

So, among the many Korean words, you can write down and read out loud the words that you are likely to use to explain your own situations in the future, and create sentences using those words. When I have a conversation, I have a lot of opportunities to say those expressions that I wrote in this journal. That's why I encourage you to keep a journal. However, the important point here is that you don't just write in your journal and leave it at that. You should write in your journal, organize the new expressions you have looked up, study them a little, and then you should be able to verbally describe the same situation without referring to your journal. I just shared a story about me having a cold.

방금 그것을 일기로 쓴다면 조금 쉬울 수 있어요. 글로 쓸 때는 아무래도 사전도 찾아보셔도 되고, 그리고 썼다가 지울 수도 있으니까 좀 어렵지 않게, 너무 어렵지 않게 글로 쓰실 수 있을 거예요. 그런데 같은 거를 말로 하라고 하면 어렵죠. 그러니까 일기를 한번 써 보시고 그거를 익혀서 말까지 이어서 연습하시는 게 아주 도움이 많이 될 거 같습니다. 이렇게 좀 공부를 하시면 말하기 실력이 늘지 않아서 고민이셨던 분들이 말하기 실력을 좀 향상시키는데 도움이 되지 않을까 생각합니다. 그리고 단어, 단어 때문에 고민하시는 분들도 많을 것 같아요.

If you write it down in a journal, it might be a little easier. When you write, you can use a dictionary, and you can also edit what you've written, so expressing yourself in writing can be less challenging. However, it becomes more difficult when you have to say the same thing. That's why I believe it would be very helpful to write a diary, learn from it, and practice speaking based on what you've written. By studying in this way, you can enhance your speaking skills. Additionally, many people often have concerns about words.

"단어를 외우기가 너무 어려워요", "단어를 외웠는데 모두 잊어버려요." 제가 유튜브 영상 댓글들을 보면 이런 고민을 하시는 분들이 정말 많으시더라고요. 그래서 제가 또 방법을 생각해 봤어요. 단어는 진짜 직접 써 보는 게 제일 중요할 것 같아요. 제가 최근에 동료들이랑 모여서 이런 얘기를 했어요. 저희 회사에 결혼하신 분들이 몇 분 계시거든요. 결혼하신 분들의 남편 분들이 사무실에 종종 놀러 오세요. 놀러 오셔서 뭐, 같이 이야기도 하고, 재밌는 시간을 보내는데요. 저 같은 경우는 좀 노는 걸 좋아해서 남편분들이 오시면 같이 재밌게 놀아요. 그런데 다른 분들 중에서 쫌 집이 먼 분들은 같이 시간을 보내지 못하고 그냥 인사만 하시는 분들이 계세요.

"It's so hard to memorize words," "I memorize words, but then I forget them all." I see a lot of those comments in our YouTube channel. So I came up with an idea. I think the most important thing is to use the words in conversations. I recently had this conversation with my colleagues. We have a few married couples in our company, and their husbands often come to visit our office. They come over, and we chat and have a good time together. Personally, I enjoy socializing, so when their husbands visit, we have fun together. However, there are some other people who live far away from the office and can't spend much time together. They just say hello and leave.

근데 그런 분들 중에서 "동료들의 남편 이름이 기억이 안 난다"라고 말하시는 분들이 꽤 있었어요. 그런데 저는 동료들의 남편 이름이 다 기억이 나는 거예요. 이유를 생각해 봤거든요. 그런데 저는 그 남편분들을 만나서 실제로 이름을 부르면서 대화를 해요. 예를 들어서, 이름이 '현우'라고 하면, "현우 님, 오늘 뭐, 사무실에 오시니까 너무 좋네요!" 이렇게 이름을 넣어서 이야기를 하거든요. 그런데 제가 이름이 기억 기억이 안 나는 남편분이 한 분이 계신 거예요. 저희 동료 중에 소연 씨가 계시는데, 소연 씨 남편분만 이름이 기억이 안 나는 거예요. 그런데 알고 보니까, 제가 소연 씨 남편분이랑만 이야기를 한 적이 없더라고요.

Among those people, quite a few mentioned, "I can't remember the names of my colleagues' husbands." However, I can remember all of my colleagues' husbands' names for some reason. I thought about why that might be the case. And then I realized that I actually engage in conversations with them, addressing them by their names. For example, if the name is "Hyunwoo," I would say, "Hyunwoo, I'm so glad you came to the office today!" However, there's one husband whose name I can't remember. It's only So-yeon's husband, among my colleagues, whose name I can't recall. And it turned out that I've never actually had a conversation with So-yeon's husband.

이런 것처럼 단어도 마찬가지예요. 한국어 단어도 똑같아요. 단어를 그냥 보고 듣는 것만으로는 부족해요. 그 단어를 '내'가 능동적으로 문장에서 사용해 봐야 돼요. 사용해서 틀리면 저는 오히려 그것도 좋다고 생각합니다. 여러분, 틀렸을 때 조금 민망하시죠? 그렇기 때문에 기억이 더 잘 나요. 만약 여러분들이 단어를 문장에서 사용했는데 틀렸다 그러면 사실 "아싸!" 이렇게 생각하셔도 좋아요. "아싸, 이 단어는 안 잊어버리겠다. 이제 틀려봤으니까. 다음에는 절대 안 틀리겠다!" 이렇게 생각하시면 돼요. 그래서 단어를 문장으로 넣어서 말해보는 게 중요한데 또 이렇게 생각하시는 분들도 있을 것 같아요.

It's the same with words. The same goes for Korean words. Simply seeing and hearing a word is not enough. You need to actively use the word in a sentence. If you use it and make a mistake, I actually think that's a good thing. Everyone feels a bit embarrassed when they make mistakes, right? That's why you remember it better. If you use a word in a sentence and make a mistake, you can actually think, "Hooray!" "Nice! I won't forget this word. Now that I've made a mistake, I won't make the same mistake again!" So it's important to incorporate words into sentences and say them out loud. I believe some people might think like this.

"선생님, 저는 문장에 단어를 넣어서 얘기할 기회가 없어요", "저는 한국어로 얘기할 친구가 없어요." 이렇게 말씀하시 분들이 많을 거예요. 그런데 저는 그래도 연습할 수 있다고 믿습니다. 방법은 크게 두 가지예요. 하나는 혼잣말, 혼잣말을 하는 거고요. 두 번째는 아까 말씀드렸던 일기! 일기에 대해서는 조금 전에 설명을 드렸으니까 혼잣말을 하는 방법, 혼잣말을 통해서 외국어를 공부하는 방법에 대해서 이야기해 볼게요. 혼잣말은 정말 도움이 많이 된다고 저는 확신을 합니다. 제가 영어 공부를 대부분 혼잣말로 했어요. 저도 한국에 살면서 사실 영어로 이야기할 기회가 없어요. 전혀 없어요. 한 달에 하루도 없는 것 같아요.

"But, Yeji, I don't have the opportunity to put words in sentences," "I don't have friends to talk to in Korean," and so on. But I believe that you can still practice. And there are two main ways: one is to talk to yourself, and the second is the journal I mentioned earlier! I talked about journals a little bit earlier, so let's talk about self-talk and how to learn a foreign language through self-talk. I'm convinced that self-talk is really helpful. I've mostly practiced my English by talking to myself. Since I live in Korea, I don't really have the opportunity to speak English. Not at all, not even for a single day in a whole month.

그런데 지금 영어를 꽤나 편하게 하고 있죠. 제 영어 말하기 실력의 대부분은 혼잣말에서 왔습니다. 저는 매일 아침에 한 시간 정도씩 혼잣말로 이야기를 했어요. 혼자 어떤 주제를 가지고 상대방이 있다고 생각을 하고 말을 하는 거예요. 여러분, 어색하지 않아요. 한두 번만 해 보면 괜찮아요. 그래서 여러분이 어떤 단어를 새로 배우셨다면 그 단어를 이용해서 혼잣말을 해 보세요. 예를 들어서, 여러분이 '등산'이라는 단어를 배웠어요. 등산, 산에 오른다는 뜻이죠. 그러면 이 등산이라는 단어를 가지고 혼자 얘기를 해 보는 거예요. 예를 들어서, "저는 등산을 안 좋아했어요.

But I'm pretty comfortable with English now. Most of my English speaking skills came from talking to myself. I used to talk to myself (in English) for about an hour every morning. It's just me talking to myself about a topic and pretending there's someone else there. Everyone, it's not awkward. You just have to try it once or twice. If you've learned a new word, use it to talk to yourself. For example, you learned the word "등산". "등산" means to climb a mountain. You can then talk to yourself using the word "등산." For example, "I never liked to climb mountains.

그런데 등산을 우연히 1년 전에 한 번 해 봤어요. 그런데 너무 좋은 거예요. 그래서 그때부터 등산을 취미로 하고 있어요. 매주 주말에 산에 오르고 있어요." 이렇게 혼잣말로 얘기를 해 보시면, 그냥 등산이라는 단어를 등산, 등산, 등산, hiking, 등산, hiking 이렇게 외우시는 거보다 훨씬 더 빠르고 효과적으로 단어를 학습하실 수 있다고 생각을 합니다. 그리고 다음으로, 제 읽기랑 쓰기 방법에 대해서도 한번 얘기를 해 볼게요. 제가 사실 이렇게 공부법에 대해서 이야기하는 거를 굉장히 좋아해요. 저도 외국어를 좀 오래 공부했어요, 혼자.

But then, I happened to go mountain climbing a year ago. And I loved it. So I've been climbing ever since. I climb mountains every weekend." If you talk to yourself like that, you're going to learn the word "등산" much faster and more effectively than just to memorize it like "등산", "hiking", "등산", "hiking." And then next, let's talk about my reading and writing learning methods. I actually love talking about study methods like this. I studied a foreign language for a long time, on my own.

영어를 혼자 쫌 오래 공부를 했기 때문에 학습자로서 겪는 어려움을 저도 다 겪어 봤거든요. 제가 언어에 그렇게 특별히 재능이 있진 않아요. 그냥 평범한 사람이에요. 그렇기 때문에 여러분들이 한국어를 배우시면서 겪는 어려움을 제가 다 겪어 봤기 때문에 그리고 겪고 있기 때문에 좀 할 말이 많네요. 그래서 생각보다 지금 시간이 많이 지났는데 여러분들이 이 영상 많이 좋아해 주시면, 제가 다음 편으로 또 이어서 가져오겠습니다. 읽기랑 쓰기 방법에 대해서 가볍게만 얘기를 해 볼게요. 읽기는 그래도 쫌 공부 방법이 명확한 쪽이라고 생각을 하거든요.

Since I've been studying English on my own for quite a while, I have experienced the difficulties that learners face. I'm not particularly gifted in languages. I'm just an ordinary person. That's why I have a lot to share because I have gone through or am currently experiencing the challenges that you encounter while learning Korean. I consider reading to be a learning area with relatively clear study methods.

"예지 선생님 제가 쓰기 공부를 혼자 할 수 있어요. 혼자 한국어를 쓸 수 있어요. 그런데 만약에 제 한국어가 틀리면 어떡해요? 제가 틀린 한국어를 계속 계속 쓰고 있으면 어떡해요? 고쳐줄 사람이 없어요.

You need to read a lot and write a lot to improve reading and writing skills. That's obvious. If you read a lot and write a lot, you'll get better. But when you study writing, many people would think, "Okay, Yeji, I can study writing by myself. I can write Korean by myself. But what if my Korean is wrong? What if I keep writing wrong Korean? There's no one to correct me.

고쳐줄 사람이 없어서 쓰기 연습을 하기가 어려워요." 이렇게 생각하시는 분들 계시죠. 저도 사실은 그렇게 생각을 했어요. 그런데 지금은 그 생각이 좀 많이 없어졌어요. 왜냐면 여러분, 사실 이렇게 쓰기도 그렇고 말하기도 그렇고 고쳐줄 수 있는 사람이 있는 환경이 더 특별한 환경이에요. 여러분, 본인의 모국어를 한번 생각해 보세요. 내가 예를 들어서, 영어가 모국어다. 근데 영어 평소에 얘기를 할 때 틀린 거를 주위에서 고쳐 주나요? 사실 그러기에는 어렵죠. 말을 하다 보면, 소소한 문법이나 발음 실수를 하기 마련인데 이때 사람들이 항상 고쳐 주진 않아요.

It's hard to practice writing because there's no one to correct me." Many people would think like this. Actually, I was one of them, too. But now I don't think that way. Because, you know, it's actually more special to be in an environment where you have someone to correct you, whether you're writing or speaking. Everyone, think about your first language. For example, let's say your first language is English. But when you speak English in your daily life, do people correct your mistakes? Actually, it's difficult for them to do so. When we speak, we tend to make minor grammar or pronunciation mistakes, but people don't always correct them.

그러니까 오히려 고쳐 주지 않는 환경이 더 자연스럽다는 거를 어느 정도 인정을 할 필요가 있는 것 같아요. 내가 꼭 고쳐 주는 사람이 있어야만 말하기 연습을 할 수 있는 건 아니에요. 내가 꼭 고쳐 줄 수 있는 사람이 있어야만 쓰기 연습을 할 수 있는 건 아니에요. 내가 열심히 언어를 계속 공부를 하다 보면, 말하기도 그렇고 쓰기도 그렇고, 스스로의 말과 글을 볼 수 있는 눈이 생겨요. 그리고 결국에 언어 공부는 계속 혼자서 이뤄 나가야 된다고 생각을 하거든요. 근데 여기서 말하는 혼자는 뭐, 다른 뭐 유튜브나 책이나 도움 하나도 없이 혼자? 이걸 말하는 건 아니고요. 제가 말하는 혼자는 이제 나를 평생 담당해 줄 선생님이 없이 혼자서 해야 돼요.

So you need to admit to a degree that it's more natural to be in an environment where you don't have anyone to correct your speech. You don't have to have someone correct you to practice speaking. You don't have to have someone correct you to practice writing. As long as you keep working on your Korean, you get to develop skills to correct your own speech and writing. And at the end of the day, language learning is something that you have to do on your own. But when I say "on your own", I don't mean "on your own without YouTube, books, or any other help". I'm talking about doing it on my own, without a teacher who's going to be in charge of my Korean for the rest of my life.

내가 내 언어 학습의 선생님이에요. 이런 관점으로 언어 공부를 해 나가야 한다고 생각을 하거든요. 그래서 쓰기도, 비록 내가 지금 쓰고 있는 문장이 100% 정답은 아닐지라도 쓰는 거예요. 쓰고 말해 보는 거예요. 그렇게 실력을 계속 키우다 보면 어느 순간 '나는 여기서 항상 이렇게 써 왔는데 지금 다른 사람들이 쓰는 걸 보니까, 이 문법이 틀린 것 같다'라는 생각을 하게 돼요. 예를 들어서, "다리 아프기 때문에 여기 앉으세요." 이렇게 이야기를 했다고 생각을 해 봐요. "예지 씨, 다리 아프기 때문에 여기 앉으세요." 이렇게 얘기를 했어요.

You're your own language learning teacher. That's how you should approach language learning. So, even if the sentences you're using are not 100% correct, you should keep writing and speaking in Korean. And as you keep improving, at some point you realize, "I've always using this grammar like this, but now that I see how others use it, the way I use this grammar seems incorrect," For example, let's say you've been saying "다리 아프기 때문에 여기 앉으세요. (As your legs might hurt, please sit here)." You've been saying "Yeji, 다리 아프기 때문에 여기 앉으세요."

그런데 계속 한국어 드라마도 보고 뭐, 톡투미 인 코리안의 비빔챗, 수다 타임, 이야기 이런 쫌 자연스러운 한국어 대화를 하는 콘텐츠를 많이 봤더니, 예지 씨 다리 아프니까 여기에 앉으세요. 이렇게 말하는 게 더 자연스럽다는 걸 깨닫게 돼요. "예지 씨, 다리 아프니까 여기에 앉으세요." 그러면 그때부터 이제 내가 그게 학습이 되는 거예요. 그래서 자연스럽게 고칠 수 있어요. 말하기도 마찬가지예요. 여러분들 제가 혼자서, 혼잣말하는 방법 추천했잖아요. 혼자 말씀을 하실 때 녹음을 꼭 해 보세요. 여러분들 녹음하라는 얘기 많이 들었죠. 근데 한 번도 안 해 보신 분들 분명히 계실 거예요. 한번 해 보세요. 왜 해 보라고 말씀을 드리냐면, 이유가 있어요.

But as you continue to watch Korean dramas and natural Korean conversation content like Bibimchat, Suda Time, and Iyagi from Talk To Me In Korean, you realize that it's more natural to say, "예지 씨, 다리 아프니까 여기에 앉으세요", "예지 씨, 다리 아프니까 여기에 앉으세요." Then, from that point on, you learned that grammar. So you can fix it naturally. It's the same with speaking. I recommended you talk to yourself (in Korean). When you're talking to yourself, make sure you record it. You must have been told to record a lot. But I'm sure some of you have never done it. Give it a try. I have a reason for suggesting it.

녹음을 해서 들었을 때 내가 하는 말을 제삼자 입장에서 듣는 것 같은 기분을 느낄 수 있어요. 내가 실시간으로 말을 했을 때는 내가 어떤 말을 하고 있는지 그게 말하기에 바빠서 쫌 잘 안 들릴 때가 있어요. 그런데 녹음을 해서 들으면 듣기에만 집중을 할 수 있어요. 그래서 내가 좀 맞지 않는 단어를 사용을 하거나 발음이 조금 어색한 거를 녹음을 한 걸 들으면서 스스로 고칠 수가 있어요. 그게 말할 때에는 안 들려요. 그런데 녹음을 할 때에는 신기하게 들려요. 그런 부분이 생길 거예요. 그러면 아까 말씀드렸던 것처럼 어차피 내 언어의 선생님은 저거든요. 나예요. 내가 내 선생님이에요.

When you listen to the recording, it feels like you're hearing your own words from the perspective of a third person. When you speak in real time, you sometimes don't catch what you're saying because you're focused on speaking. However, when you listen to the recording, you can solely focus on listening. That way, you can identify any inappropriate word usage or awkward pronunciation and correct yourself. It's not always apparent when speaking, but it becomes noticeable when listening to the recording, which is interesting. You will experience that. As I mentioned before, you are your own language teacher. It's you. You are your own teacher.
