    I have just finished Level One of the Essential Korean Course.

    I found the lessons very enjoyable, informative, and practical. Even with the simplest grammar structures, TTMIK has made me feel like I can actually communicate in Korean about everyday real life things (my past experiences of starting language learning took me to sources aimed towards children). The lessons were well organised, systematic and easy to understand, providing me ease of mind. Also, I enjoyed the integrated approach to lessons where all aspects of language learning were addressed (reading, writing, speaking, and listening), as well as cultural aspects.     Hello all! I love using TTMIK to learn Korean. I am a little older but wanted to challenge myself and keep my brain sharp by learning another language. Here in Hawaii there are many cultures around and with the amount of Korean people and content around, I wanted to learn more about how to understand and communicate with not only people but to better enjoy all the entertainment that Korean Culture has to offer. It has been challenging as I am a Filipino born and raised in the USA so English is my native language but these lessons and the way it is all set up are helping immensely. Thank you TTMIK!       I watched a video on it. They said Korean people pronounce their n’s differently from us by having their tongue near the bottom of their teeth instead of the top of it when pronouncing it. Also, especially when the character is the first one in the one you tend to pronounce the first letter more harsh or hard. Blunter basically.

      있 어 요 is used when talking in the past such as 갔 어 요 (I went) while 이 다 is used when talking about verb stems 가 다 (to go). I hope you can understand this. Good luck in learning Korean.

      이다 means to be, sort of like an equal sign, so when you say 제 이름은 (Name)입니다. (입니다 is just 이다 conjugated) you’re really saying my name = (Name).
      있어요 is the conjugated version of 있다 meaning to exist but in a more simplified explanation, it means to have something.

    Hi there! Lesson 9 question: would it be grammatically correct and natural for native speakers to say “이거가 좋아요”, as in “THIS is good”? Or would it be more natural to just use 이거 alone, without the particle? Does this also work for 그거/그거가?

      “가” will not be used with 이/그/저 in this case, 가 is a subject marker and even if you use 이/그/저 as a subject in your sentence, you have to use 거 (것), if you are using 거, there’s no need of using 가. I hope it helped.

      There is a name! “u” is just the sound. Miss.Vicky on Youtube has a video of learning Hangul, and she tells you all the names of the consonants and vowels. Hope this helped!

      I misunderstood the lesson….I thought that the verb stem had to end in ㅏ or ㅗ to use 아요 , not that ㅏ or ㅗ is the last VOWEL and there could be a consonant after that.

      살다 is the dictionary form. And because of the “ㅏ” in “살”before “다” the rule is that “아요” is the ending, not “어요”
      먹다 is an example for the second one. There is “ㅓ” in “먹” before “다” so “어요” is the ending.

      Korea has its own alphabet called Hangul:) we do not need to know the English alphabet in Korean

      Hi, can somebody tell me, how do you know what order you put the words in, in a sentence? I am now doing lesson 18, and it said: 3. Let us say “Where do you want to go?” in Korean.
      to go = 가다 [ga-da]
      do you want to go = 가 + 고 싶어요 = 가고 싶어요 [ga-go si-peo-yo]
      where = 어디 [eo-di]
      to = -에 [-e]
      Where do you want to go? = 어디에 가고 싶어요? [eo-di-e ga-go si-peo-yo?]

      And so I tried to guess the whole sentence, I got it right, but the order wrong. So, how do you know where each part goes, exactly? (exactly because I know that the 가고 싶어요 [ga-go-si-peo-yo] part is at the end 🙂 )

      마자요! Correct! you would but “어디” in front of “가고 싶어요.” For me, it helps to translate the English sentence into the Korean grammar order first before putting it into Korean. You would want to end up with something like ” to what place (어디) do you want to go (가고 싶어요). These examples are kind of similar but I use that to help.

      I’m Indian so I’m learning Korean by using Hindi. Because both Hindi and Korean use the same pattern to form sentence. so, like if you know Hindi it’ll be easy to form Korean sentence.

      Remember that the Korean sentence structure follows the subject-object-verb or adjective order. As I understand, here “어디에” is the object of the sentence, and then, the whole verb (the rest of the sentence) is “가고 싶어요?”. Puting all together “어디에 가고 싶어요?”. I hope it helps you.

      So, the difference between these actually relies on word ending. There’s no actual difference, it’s really just a grammatical thing. If the word ends in a consonant, then it will end in 이에요 (i-eh-yo). So, if you were saying “This is Water.” Water = 물 in Korean, and the last ‘character’ is ㄹ, which is consonant. Therefore, it’d be 물이에요.

      However, if the word ends in a vowel, then you are going to add 예요 (ye-yo). So, if you were to say “This is coffee.” Coffee = 커티 in Korean, and the last ‘character’ is ㅣ, which is a vowel. Therefore, it’d be 커피예요.

      What i have found is that the double consonant sounds are closer to the English pronunciations. ㄸis like a d in English, ㅆ is like an s, ㅉ is like a j, and ㅃ is like a b.

      Hi! So what you’re looking at are Korean “Double Consonants.” Five of the Korean consonants take this form: ㄲ, ㄸ, ㅉ, ㅃ, and ㅆ. The main difference is in emphasis. Double consonants are said with more emphasis than their single counterparts. They are stronger and sharper. TTMK actually has a nice video on it that may be helpful since hearing the consonants out loud may be more effective.

(Just letting you know I don’t have the Korean keyboard) SO the s is just the normal s sound (like salt or sandwich, but it can change to a sh sound depending on the vowels used) but ss is a stronger s sound not necessarily a sh sound. The ss sort of sounds like when we imitate a snake (sssss). J and jj is similar. J is the normal j sound (like juice or jump) while jj is a stronger sound (I usually pronounce it like the j while smiling lol). Hope this helped, if not, try using google translate to try and differentiate the sounds!!!

      I don’t claim to be an expert but the way I understood it was that the ㅅ is pronounced like the s in “standing” or “stop” (so it automatically makes a ‘sh’ sound with the ‘ee’ vowel after it), your tongue is slightly behind your closed teeth and then you pass air through it (I hope this makes sense).
      And I understood ㅆ as a sharp, hissing sound(like the English ‘s’), like the ‘s’ sound in “sun” or “set”.

      Hmm….for the difference between ㅈ and ㅉ , that is a bit difficult to explain because…..Okay.
      Random fact: My mother tongues are Urdu and English. And in Urdu, there are two different ‘j’ sounds (whose romanization is different: ‘j’ and ‘jh’). I related ㅈ( جھ )(‘jh’) and ㅉ( ج )(‘j’) to them. I’ll try my best to explain, though.
      So ㅉ can be (in a way) considered to be the same as the English ‘j’. The English ‘j’ is a tense sound, if you think about it. It’s not that aspirated, I would say.
      But ㅈ is aspirated. If you try to read ‘j’ and ‘h’ together quickly(quick enough that the two sounds become one) , you might get it (I say “might” because for me, the ‘jh’ naturally becomes ‘جھ’ sound in my mind, so I can’t say for a person who doesn’t know Urdu)
      I hope that helped. Sorry I couldn’t explain it better. 🙂

      ㄴ: [n] like in “No”

      ㅁ: [m] like in “MoM”

      ㅐ: [ae] it sounds like when you say the letter A but you mix it a bit with “e” like in “bEd”

      ㅔ: [e] like the E “bEd”

I can toggle between languages by selecting from the taskbar or using the Windows key + space bar. Once selected to type in 한글, there is a Hangul/English toggle on the taskbar.       Si bien ㅆ y ㅅ ambas tienen la similitud de que son una “s” para los hispanos hablantes, su diferencia es que ㅅ es una s suave (menos marcada) y ㅆ terminaría siendo cómo una doble s, es decir, si la romanizamos sería una ss (es mucho más marcada).       Hi. Have you studied hangeul yet? If not, you should. It would be really helpful and you will be able to understand the difference between the vowel and consonant sounds. I tried to learn Korean first without learning hangeul and it possible but difficult. Once I sat down and learned the alphabet it became extremely easy.

      First, in the word 괜찮아, it is not just ㅗ. It is the diphthong 왜. A diphthong is a combination of vowels. I suggest you look up a video about this and you will understand them better. But yes, 왜 is pronounced “wae”. If you pronounce both vowels together and fast, you will hear a sound almost identical to “wae”. I hope this helped.

      Kaylie Lam, I think what you mean is “아니요, 괜찮아요”.It means something like “No, thank you, I’m fine” when someone for example offers you something

Can someone tell me how to say that in Korean, please? One sec, or one second, it doesn’t matter because they both mean the same. Thanks!! 🙂
