Hi TTMIK team,
I’ve been studying Korean for few months now, and I don’t feel like I’ve improved as much a expected.
I’m on. level 4 now and there many points from the past levels that either I don’t remember or even forgot !
What would you recommend me to do apart from just doing the exercises and listening to the podcasts?
Thank you so much for your help !
Jeff
Learning a language is not easy, but you’ve been studying Korean for over a few months. That is already amazing thing you’ve done for your Korean skills. Sometimes, you might feel you are stuck at some parts, but if you keep moving forward, you will eventually be on the level you’ve been looking for. Please enjoy studying Korean, and if you have any other questions, feel free to contact us 🙂
Honestly I’ve only gotten time to learn Korean as a hobby so I end up with months of time between doing two lessons, so though I only just finished level 3 after a little over a year, my placement test allocated me to level 5. I would say the only reason this is possible is because of viewing Korean content. Whether that be music, dramas, variety shows, random YouTube videos, literally anything and just talking in Korean. No one around me knows Korean so I just talk to my family in Korean and then translate it for them. I suggest just view content and let yourself absorb the language. The more you see people talking in Korean in different situations the better. For me the most helpful are videos of Kpop idols, for example BTS’ Bangtan Bombs and BTS Episodes, because you see multiple people in various situations speaking Korean with all different sets of vocabulary, levels of formality, etc.
(P.S. Korean gets easy with practice. Even my dog knows Korean now and does tricks with me just giving him verbal instructions in Korean, which is why he is also the one I converse with the most in Korean.)
About your dog: I also often speak to my cat in Korean. And the good thing is, my cat is like a reminder to do some speaking practise – whenever she jumps on my lap I just talk about what I ate this morning 😀
I definitely feel like I have caught up some stuff in Korean, I understand more than I used to couples months ago !
Watching videos helps a lot indeed.
And I never talk to myself or even practice out loud …
I speak 6 languages and am working on my 7th (korean) and though everyone’s way of studying is different. I recommend you combine several learning sources. For example, YT vids, books, apps. I like to divide each source and combine them by beginner, intermediate, and advanced. Along the way I just look at new words just to build my vocabulary each day without worrying about grammar or spelling. Once I believe I am at intermediate I will just watch TV shows and movies using subtitles in both my native language and what I am learning. This helps instill pronunciation, and common phrases while picking up new vocabulary even more. I go back to “intermediate” books and study guides, apps etc then watch again. As an added challenge once I believe I am middle to upper intermediate I will start reading books up until advanced. This especially helps with vocabulary, spelling, and grammar. I always read last and dont put alot of emphasis on proper spelling or grammar in the beginning if at all. For me, talking and hearing is more important and the rest becomes easier.
My parents for example, went to America not knowing English after they got married. They learned English through talking and vocabualary. I think when you have too many sources it becomes hard for some because they arent keeping it simple or doing it a way they learn best. Most people (myself included) learn best by ear so if thats you (like most people are) just listen and talk while building vocab. read and worry about “perfect” grammar. If you learn best by writing and repititon, do that while learning. Incorperate what you are best at to memorize your material. You mentioned you forgot past things so I also think you may not be reviewing as well as you should. You have to speak it too while learning, If theres no Koreans to talk to, you must practice alone or find a buddy online. Language is lost when you dont use it often enough.
Thank you for sharing your advice. Awesome!!
Super helpful advice Deborah, thank you so much !
Indeed I do watch videos online, kdramas, BTS episodes … my boyfriend is Korean (but he never helps me though lol).
Along side your workbook, do you keep notes of what. you’ve learned over the past levels?
Also, would you be interested in sharing Kakao iD, so we can practice?
Hey! I would be interested in sharing my kakao ID with you 🙂 Even though I learn korean for 1,5 years, I´m really bad but I would like to practice with you.
You should try to talk to your Korean boyfriend in Korean even if he speaks English back to you. That might be still helpful for you 🙂
