  1. k h,

hi, can i ask are ์œ„ํ•ด and ์œ„ํ•ด์„œ interchangeable? and is it wrong if i use ์œ„ํ•ด์—ฌ or ์œ„ํ•ด์—ฌ์„œ?

    • savanna,

Yes they are interchangeable. ‘์œ„ํ•ด์—ฌ(์„œ)’is wrong, it should be ‘์œ„ํ•˜์—ฌ(์„œ)’ which is grammatically correct. However, you should use ‘์œ„ํ•ด(์„œ)’ which would be more natural.

    • Talk To Me In Korean,

      Thanks for the comment ๐Ÿ™‚

  2. Anandhi ,

    Hi! Doubt again ๐Ÿ˜…
    Lesson 4:
    ์ด ์‚ฌ๋žŒ์€ ๋ˆ„๊ตฌ์ผ๊นŒ์š”?
    [i sa-ra-meun nu-gu-il-kka-yo?]
Shouldn’t it be nu-gul-kka-yo? As nu-gu ends in a vowel?

    • Fan,

nu-gu (sorry, I don’t have a Korean keyboard) is a question word which means “who”. Therefore, you need to attach a verb to it to ask “who” they are. Here, the verb i-da “to be” is used. And with -(eu)-l kka-yo, i-da becomes il-kka-yo.
I hope it is clearer !

    • ยท Fernanda ยท,

When you ask plainly “who is that person?” you say “์ด ์‚ฌ๋žŒ์€ ๋ˆ„๊ตฌ์˜ˆ์š”?” You’re using the verb “์ด๋‹ค”. It’s the same with the example above, you need to use ์ผ๊นŒ์š”, if you don’t the sentence would literally mean ” i wonder that person who”
I hope this helps, I’m not good at explaining ๐Ÿ™

    • ยท Fernanda ยท,

Who is this* sorry my mistake

    • Sasha,

Isnt that exactly the meaning of ์ด ์‚ฌ๋žŒ์€ ๋ˆ„๊ตฌ์ผ๊นŒ์š”. Isnt it suppose to mean ” i wonder who that person is”?

  3. Anandhi ,

Hello. This is a doubt regarding lesson 3.
    ๋‚˜๋ฌด ๋’ค์— ์ˆจ์–ด ์žˆ์—ˆ์–ด์š”.
    [na-mu dwi-e su-meo i-sseo-sseo-yo.]
= I have been hiding behind the tree.

Shouldn’t this be “dwi-eso” because it talks about “hiding” which is an action?

    • fillyy_,

      ๋‚˜๋ฌด ๋’ค์— ์ˆจ์–ด ์žˆ์—ˆ์–ด์š”.
      [na-mu dwi-e su-meo i-sseo-sseo-yo.]
= I have been hiding behind the tree.

It’s difficult to explain cos it doesn’t literally translate well in English.
์ˆจ์–ด is a noun that means “the act of hiding”. The verb ์žˆ์—ˆ์–ด์š” is the past tense of “to exist/to be at a location”.

Since it’s a noun and you are just stating a location with the noun of “hiding”, you don’t use “dwi-eso”.

It’s sort of more like “I am/was at the tree while hiding”. The emphasis in this example sentence is the location that you are at the tree, not necessarily that you’re hiding. That’s how it works in Korean. It’s a noun in Korean. It’s complicated.

    • Anandhi ,

      Thank you for your response.
Then how do I figure out which actions act like a noun in a sentence and which don’t?

    • fillyy_,

If you look at a Korean dictionary, you will find that verbs will end in ๋‹ค while words that aren’t verbs will appear as they would normally since they can’t be conjugated.

Think of ์ˆจ์–ด as translating as “stealth” and ์žˆ์—ˆ์–ด์š” as “had”.
So ๋‚˜๋ฌด ๋’ค์— ์ˆจ์–ด ์žˆ์—ˆ์–ด์š” would kind of literally translate to I had stealth behind the tree. Having stealth isn’t an action you are doing at the tree, you just happen to be at the tree with stealth. That’s how the Korean language phrases “hiding”.

    • Anandhi ,

      Oh okay! Thank you! ๐Ÿ˜

  4. Toh Tzyy Chyi,

Hi, I have a question about lesson 24. In the lesson said if the verb stem ends with -๋ฅด [-reu], then followed by other endings, such as -์•„/์–ด/์—ฌ๊ณ  [-a/eo/yeo-go], -๋Š”๋ฐ [-neun-de], etc., -๋ฅด will still stay the same. Could you give some examples in this case?

    • fillyy_,

if I use lesson 21 as an example,

      ๋น ๋ฅด๋‹ค [ppa-reu-da] = to be fast
      ๋น ๋ฅธ๋ฐ

      ๋ชจ๋ฅด๋‹ค [mo-reu-da] = to not know
      ๋ชจ๋ฅด๋Š”๋ฐ

Hope this helps! Just keep the -๋ฅด [-reu] and add the other endings following the rules of the other endings while keeping -๋ฅด [-reu]

  5. Jiyeon,

  8. Afreen Fatima,

Hi guys, I am going to begin Level 3. Anybody wanna practice sentences so far, and is on Hello Talk? Please let me know.

  9. moonchild,

    Why did you say”๊ณต๋ถ€๊ฐ€
์‰ฌ์›Œ์š”” in lesson 11? (sample sentences)
I mean why did you delete ํ•˜ and ๊ฐ€ to the verb?
If someone know this please help me.

    • Lee C.,

If you look at the sentence ํ•œ๊ตญ์–ด ๊ณต๋ถ€๊ฐ€ ์‰ฌ์›Œ์š”, ๊ณต๋ถ€ is used as a noun (ํ•œ๊ตญ์–ด ๊ณต๋ถ€ –> “the study of Korean”). ํ•˜๋‹ค makes it a verb, so the ํ•˜๋‹ค is not necessary in this sentence. ๊ฐ€ is there to mark the subject of the sentence.

    • moonchild,

      ๊ฐ์‚ฌํ•ฉ๋‹ˆ๋‹ค!

    • moonchild,

      add ๊ฐ€ to the verb*

    • Dianne Pedroso,

Hi! I am also trying to learn on my own. May I join your study group?

  14. Diana Mortagua,

Hello, (Lesson 24) why in “ํ† ๋ผ๋ฅผ 5๋…„ ๋™์•ˆ ๊ธธ๋ €์–ด์š”.” we use ์–ด and not ์•„?? Hor do we know since all the verbs end with ๋ฅด?

    • Maria Auxiliadora Salazar Arias,

For the little I know, it is because it is ๊ธฐ๋ฅด, so you have to take into account that the verb ends in
“ใ…ฃ” because the “ใ…ก” disappears, so if it is not “ใ…— or ใ…” you use ~์–ด์š”/์—ˆ์–ด์š”, in this case it is “๊ธฐ” so it is ๊ธธ๋ €์–ด์š”. I hope I made myself understood. ๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ˜Š I hope I am right. ๐Ÿคญ๐Ÿคญ๐Ÿคญ

    • Nas Rozay,

๊ธฐ๋ฅด๋‹ค -> ๊ธธ๋Ÿฌ์š” usingใ…“because when ๋ฅด followed by vowel it’s became double ใ„น and as we need to choose ใ… orใ…“ so we need to look at the previous syllable which is ๊ธฐ and as it mentioned by Anna P: except for ใ… ใ…—, which are followed by ใ… the others are followed by ใ…“.
      that’s why ๋‹ค๋ฅด๋‹ค -> ๋‹ฌ๋ผ์š” because the previous syllable before ๋ฅด is ๋‹ค – means we chose ใ…
always look at the previous vowel in the word.
      hope it helps ๐Ÿ™‚

    • Anna P,

as far as I know, it depends on the vowel, like in all the conjugations except for ใ… ใ…œ, which are followed by ใ… the others are followed by ใ…“so ๋‹ค๋ฅด๋‹ค -> ๋‹ฌ๋ผ์š” but ๊ธฐ๋ฅด๋‹ค -> ๊ธธ๋Ÿฌ์š”

      It is ๋ฐฉํ–ฅ.

  18. Carissa,

Hi, I am at level 6 currently but I just want to give a suggestion. I searched through all the levels and wondered why -๋ผ์„œ was never taught. I think it’ll be nice to include it in Lesson 3 Level 7? I think this add-on would be perfect.

    • Tian Tian,

What does it mean? Could you explain please?

    • Carissa,

Hi, sorry for the late reply, I don’t know how to check notifications here. What I meant is that I thought that it’d be appropriate for TTMIK to include the grammar point -(์ด)๋ผ์„œ in Level 3 Lesson 7 (just realised I typed wrongly in my original comment) because that grammar point is similar to -์•„/์–ด/์—ฌ์„œ as they’re both grammar points related to explaining or giving reasons. -(์ด)๋ผ์„œ is used with a noun like this: N + (์ด)๋ผ์„œ whereas -์•„/์–ด/์—ฌ์„œ is used with a verb as explained in the lesson. One example of using -(์ด)๋ผ์„œ is like this: ์›”์š”์ผ์ด๋ผ์„œ ํ•œ๊ตญ์–ด ์ˆ˜์—…์ด ์—†์–ด์š”. In English: I do not have Korean class as it is Monday.

If you scroll all the way down on any page of the TTMIK website there should be a link to the download page for all the book audio files (“Book Audio”). Make sure to download the files for the workbook rather than the textbook though, which is a mistake I made initially.
