Things started to get interesting in this level! I love how you guys explained all the nuances. I’m also using a book of short traditional Korean stories in simple language and I love how that book and these lessons complement each other so well. I learn vocabulary faster by reading real texts and I find that I can understand more and more with all of these verb endings. They also make me understand better the minds of Koreans. Vocabulary is usually the most difficult for me when learning a new language, that’s why I really love the word builder lessons. But in general, I love grammar the most, and I find Korean grammar really interesting. Thank you so much for all the work you put into this, TTMIK is really the best resource for learning Korean by myself that I’ve found. I know these lessons were recorded a long time ago (iPhone 4? nobody at TTMIK is married or have children? lol), but if I can add a little suggestion, I hope you will do more of the waiting before saying the answer in Korean, so that we can think and then reply before you do. Also, I do like it when you repeat the same words for a few episodes for the examples, that’s how we get to finally memorise the words! I’m really excited about continuing learning Korean, can’t wait to dive into level 4. The more I learn, the more there seems to be, but that’s okay, because it’s a whole new language that I’m learning, and I love how different it is to all the languages I already know. By the way, I never listen to the lessons in the morning, I usually listen to them while getting ready for bed, and I like to repeat them several times in different order. Again, thank you, really, I’m so grateful that you guys decided to start TTMIK and I’m proud of you for doing such a fantastic work and so consistently. Thank you!

In level 3 lesson 25 the woman (Kyong-ho?) ends each example with a rise in intonation. Does the ending 네요 always rise at the end?

level 3 lesson 9 covers this. You can use -(이)랑 and -하고 interchangeably. You simply use 같아요 after nouns to say they are the same, and 랑 or 하고 connects the two nouns, for example 이책은 랑 그책 같아요 is how you would say This book and that book are the same. When using verbs, you must change them into their noun form, level 3 lesson 9 covers how to do that.

1. does 먹는 거 mean ‘eating’ or ‘the thing you eat’?
2. what’s the difference between 먹는 거 and 먹는 게?

It means “the act of eating”
Ex. 먹는 거 좋아해요
I like eating
(Lit. I like to do the act of eating )
그 가수랑 사진 찍는 거 하면 좋겠어요.
I would like to take a photo with that singer
(Lit. If i could do the action of taking a photo with that singer, it would be nice)
This is just an abbreviated form 🙂
먹는 거가 = 먹는 게
먹는 거를 = 먹는 걸
먹는 거는 = 먹는 건
먹는 거 mean ‘eating’ as well as ‘the thing you eat’ – context is crucial in these types of situations. I also highly recommend reading about the nuances between ~기 and ~는 것 because they aren’t always interchangeable!

Also, I’m happy that you guys offer a level test. I’ve been learning Korean for years now and because it’s mostly been self-teaching I never knew what level I was. I knew I wasn’t completely beginner but I couldn’t confidently say intermediate but in-between sounds about right. I feel better knowing this.

hi! um, I have a question about lesson 24… does the ending -어/여/아도 change the verbs with 르 in it too? because in the workbook there is a sentence with that as the prompt in the parenthesis and the verb was changed in the answer key but -어/여/아도 was not mentioned as one of the 3 endings in the textbook and audio… thanks! 🙂

I really enjoy your lessons and I am learning a lot in Level 3.
I am just a little confused by the concepts of “before 전에” and “after 다음에” when they are used with verbs in Korean: When you use “after” with a verb you take the Verbstem+기 + 전에. However when you use “before” with a verb you take the Verbstem+은/ㄴ + 다음에.
공부하기 전에 = before studying
공부 한 다음에 = after studying
So, with 전에you basically turn the verb into a noun, but with 다음에you use a modifier for the verb and turn it into an adjective in the past tense. Why are they different?
Is there a general rule for when to use a korean grammatical pattern by turning a verb into a noun and when to use a grammar pattern by changing the verb with a modifier?

hello/i think there is not general saying whether to use verb in noun form or not.memorizing them by listening their topics from kdramas,kpops stuff is a good thing .
and in usage of BEFORE, it is literally before doing IT .. so verb form is changed into noun form . and in usage of AFTER, the thing is ,.you have done it .right? so we conjugated verb stem into past tense verb form (은)ㄴ ..
